A Noncooperative Reformulation of the Core
نویسنده
چکیده
The concept of the core is reformulated to handle externality problems where the total payoff for a coalition depends upon the actions of the players outside the coalition. A deviating coalition has rational expectations of the outsiders’ individual attempts to stop the deviation and their coalitional response if the deviaiton cannot be stopped, with the coalitional response itself a core solution among the outsiders. A noncooperative game of competing principals is designed and the set of its subgame perfect equilibria, with two refinement conditions, is equal to the reformulated core. Applied to a problem of pollution externality, the new concept of the core prescribes a way to maintain Pareto optimal cooperation without repeated games or a central planner. ∗Department of Economics, Iowa State University, 260 Heady Hall, Ames, IA 50011, [email protected], http://www.econ.iastate.edu/people/faculty/CV/669czheng.html.

A Noncooperative Reformulation of the Core (Preliminary and Not for Circulation)
It is proved that the core in a general setting for cooperative games is equal to the set of subgame perfect equilibria of a noncooperative game of competing contracts. A coalitional deviation in a cooperative game corresponds to, in the noncooperative game, the involved agents’ participation in a contract proposed by a deviating principal. ∗Department of Economics, Iowa State University, 260 H...

متن کاملThe Untapped Power of Soda Taxes: Incentivizing Consumers, Generating Revenue, and Altering Corporate Behavior
Globally, soda taxes are gaining momentum as powerful interventions to discourage sugar consumption and thereby reduce the growing burden of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Evidence from early adopters including Mexico and Berkeley, California, confirms that soda taxes can disincentivize consumption through price increases and raise revenue to support government programs. The Unit...
متن کاملOptimization of RFM's Structure Using a New Reformulation of PSO in Case of Limited GCPs
Metaheuristic algorithms have been widely used in determining the optimum rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs). By eliminating a number of unnecessary RPCs, these algorithms increase the accuracy of geometric correction of high-resolution satellite images. To this end, these algorithms use ordinary least squares and a number of ground control points (GCPs) to determine RPCs' values. Due to t...
